HIT Alert: Two Teenage Girls Abducted and Raped in Southern California

Two unfortunate stories to talk about in this blog post: there was a 16-year old girl, recently (6/10/09), from the San Pedro, CA area who was abducted at gun point and raped. There was also a 15-year old girl abducted and raped in the North Park, San Diego, CA area. Both stories are similar in nature. The girls were approached by a predator (one with a gun and one with a knife) and told to get into a car. The predator then drove them to an isolated location, raped them, and dropped them off at a different location.
These stories are very tough to read. I want to make one quick statement: when I offer tips to avoid these situations, I don’t mean to suggest the either of these young ladies did anything wrong. I only offer the suggestions to try and prevent future attacks:
Remember, the predator has (2) things in mind before he commits an attack: can I get away with the attack without getting caught and without getting hurt.
If your kids (or you) find yourselves in this situation, RUN… and YELL. In the San Diego case, the ‘perp’ approached the young lady in a car and told her to get in - she said ‘no’ and continued to walk. He then kept up his pursuit and eventually produced a knife and forced her into the car.
You want to give the ‘perp’ unwanted consequences: when you run and yell, he is forced to make a decision - do I pursue and potentially get caught with the unwanted attention or do I flee.
Please share this with your children. The more we can get the message out there - the more we can try and decrease these types of attacks.
Here is a quick description of the ‘perps’ in both cases:
San Pedro Attack: Male, mid-30’s. If you have any information, contact the LAPD Sex Crimes Unit.
San Diego Attack: Latino Male, 20-25 years old, medium build, short brown hair with possible goatee, 1990’s 4-door sedan, red or maroon. If you have any information about this attack, contact the San Diego PD Sex Crimes Unit.
I hope this helps.
Stay safe.
