HIT Tips: Back to School Safety

It’s that time of year, again. The holidays are over and the kids are on their way back to school. I thought this was a good time to bring up some safety tips for your kids as they make their way back to school.

A. Secure your dorms or apartments. There are smaller window locks that you can put in the track of a slider or window that will make it harder for someone to gain entry. These also make it harder for someone to lift or push the slider or window off the track and gain entry. Another positive is you can adjust these to open the window or slider and let some air in but keep the ‘Unwanted(s)’ out. You can pick these up at any hardware store, prices range from a couple of dollars on up. Well worth the investment. Here is a link that gives some different products: http://www.nextag.com/sliding-window-lock/search-html (Don’t forget that you can cut down some PVC piping for a secure temporary lock on windows or sliders).

B. Keep those blinds closed at night. Whether you are in a dorm or apartment - don’t give any potential intruder a ‘layout of the land’. The less he knows about the inside layout of your residence, the harder it may be for him to break in and navigate in the dark without making too much noise. Also, when you have interior lights on and blinds or shades open - you prevent yourself from seeing anyone outside casing the residence. You see the t.v. shows and movies where the police interview suspects with the 2-way mirror…. same effect.

C. Sorority Houses: respect your friends (everyone needs to help): Don’t leave any of the doors or windows open. There is a larger potential to be lax on this because there are a lot of people who share the same residence. If you all lend a hand, you can keep the residence as secure as possible. Just because there are ‘numbers’ doesn’t mean that you are insulated from rape or assault. I need only bring up Ted Bundy or a list of other serial killers/rapists that gained entry into sororities because of lapses in security. They let their guard down.

Have a great 2nd Semester. Stay safe.
