Summer is right around the corner. I thought this would be a good time to cover some basic safety tips. The daylight hours are getting longer and we tend to find ourselves out later and later enjoying summer activities: exercising, camping, parties, etc. Here are a couple of reminders:
A. Keep your guard up. Have fun, but remember, be aware of your surroundings. If you’re exercising outdoors, keep the headphones (music) off. Also, don’t over fatigue yourself - something that’s easy to do as the days get hotter.
B. Watch the drinking out in the sun. Regardless of age, alcohol can get right on top of you. Be careful that you don’t overdo the festivities - this can put you in a vulnerable position.
C. In regards to camping, I might suggest you bring some pepper spray with you. Bring something to defend yourself with if a bad situation arises, especially when you are normally a good distance from police, park rangers, etc.
D. Be careful that you don’t leave windows or doors open in areas of your residence that are easily accessible to perpetrators. Be especially careful when you go to sleep at night - do a quick check and make sure things are shut tight or secure to dissuade any potential criminal activity.
Have a great summer. Here is a quick story a friend sent to me last week (talk about improvising weapons) - kudos to this young lady.
Girl beats off muggers with marching band baton

QUARTZ HILL, Calif. – Don’t mess with the marching band. That’s what California authorities are saying after a 17-year-old girl used her marching band baton to beat back two would-be muggers.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Michael Rust says the Quartz Hill girl was walking to school April 24 when two men approached her from behind, tried to grab her coat and demanded money.
Instead, one got a punch in the nose and the other a kick to the groin. Rust says the girl then beat both of them with her band baton before she ran away.
The men had not been caught. But Rust says there’s a clear message to take from the encounter:
“The moral to this story is don’t mess with the marching band girls, or you just might get what you deserve. Final score: marching band 2, thugs 0.”
