HIT Tip: Spring Break/Date Rape Prevention

Not all predators are strangers: 75% of all sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim. For high school and college age women those numbers are closer to 90%. Since we are in Spring Break time, I really want to focus on some common variables that are an impetus to Date Rape (or Acquaintance Rape). The #1 Date Rape drug on the scene? Alcohol. When individuals don’t drink responsibly they open themselves up to sexual assault. I think we’ve all seen enough Spring Break programs to understand that responsible drinking is not … Continue Reading

HIT Tips: Emotions v. Instincts

Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to talk to a lot of people who were the victims of violent crimes. One of the most common themes I’ve come across: “you know, I just felt like something was wrong… I just felt like something bad was about to happen.” Those are your instincts talking to you. We have a very unique set of senses that give us clear warning signs before an attack is about to occur. More often than not, we dismiss these warning signs as simple paranoia. Listen to your instincts, if something … Continue Reading

HIT Clip: Eye Gouge

Here is a clip from the DVD. This is a technique to use if a perpetrator gets you on your back. Here is a quick tutorial: If the perpetrator gets you on your back in an attempted rape, pinch your legs together. When he tries to pry your legs apart he leaves himself in a vulnerable position. With your legs still pinched, you want to raise your torso off the ground, grab his hair with one hand and take the other hand and gouge at the eyes. Once you gouge the eyes (and gouge … Continue Reading

HIT Alert: Teenage Girl Raped

According to local news sources in San Diego, a 16 year old girl was abducted and sexually assaulted today (March 2, 2009) in El Cajon, CA. Apparently, the young girl was walking to school when the perp got out of a car, approached her, talked to her, and then forced her into the car. He drove her to an isolated area where the assault occurred. I wanted to take some time and discuss some tactics for younger girls:

A. If possible, walk in groups… use the buddy system. Be on guard for your friends.

B. If a stranger … Continue Reading

HIT Clip: Reduce Your Risk of Date Rape

I actually meant to post this clip from the DVD a few weeks back when I posted: HIT Tips: 27% Increase in Rape. This clip really follows my suggestions on how to reduce your risk of ‘Date Rape’ (Acquaintance Rape). I saw a program a few weeks back about a young woman who was raped after being drugged on Spring Break. She found out about the rape after police showed up on her doorstep a few years later with a video and showed her the assault that apparently the perpetrator recorded. According to the program, the … Continue Reading

HIT Clip: How to Escape a Choke Hold

As promised, here is a quick clip from the HIT DVD. This is a strategy to use if someone tries to attack you from behind. Let me stress this, again: this is just one of the techniques we show you in the DVD. You need to watch and practice all of the strategies and techniques in order to prepare yourself for any number of different attacks. Also, make sure you practice this escape with someone. I always say ‘repetition is the mother of all learning’; so you need to practice this technique until it becomes instinctive. You do not want … Continue Reading

HIT Tips: 27% Increase in Rape

Recently, I caught a quick news clip on the radio about the decrease in overall crime rates in San Diego, CA - but an increase in rape (up 27%). Reported rapes went from 296 incidents in 2007 to 376 in 2008. NPR Radio News: SD Crime Statistics The SDPD attributed this increase to more victims who came forward to report the crime (specifically: Acquaintance/Date Rape). These increases are consistent with national trends that show a 25% increase in sexual assaults since 2005 - while overall violent crime is down slightly over the same period (Bureau of Justice Statistics … Continue Reading

HIT Clip: Fox News/Supplement to ‘Children’ Blog

Here is a story that Fox News ran about me a year or so back. I thought this was pertinent with the previous blog I posted on child abduction (re:HIT Tips: Children). The clip visually matches my suggestions for your children if someone tries to abduct them (you can see some of our training strategies in action). I believe the first part of the segment was shot HD (squished) - the actual story was shot standard definition and looks normal. Again, be prepared for potential Youtube artifacts and load delays. Enjoy the clip - I … Continue Reading

HIT Tips: Protecting Your Children from Abduction

Interesting story from L.A. : “Police Wednesday were looking for a man who allegedly tried to kidnap an 8-year-old boy as he was walking to school with his mother.

The attempted abduction took place at 8:10 a.m. in the 14400 block of Palm Avenue as the mother and son were walking to Palm Elementary School, sheriff’s Lt. Arthur Scott said.

A man reportedly pulled up, got out of his car and grabbed the boy by his collar, Scott said.

The woman screamed and the man let go of her son and drove off, Scott said. … Continue Reading
